I’ve Become a Fan of…Coldplay???

23 06 2008

When I was in bed sick, I listened to a lot of the radio, since I could just about reach it without walking too long. One time, my brother left it on one of London’s largest radio stations, Capital 95.8. Now usually, I’d be listening to LBC 97.3, since all they do is talk about how weird our sceptred isle happens to be.

I didn’t care for much of the music, but three tracks I found to be rather enjoyable - and all by Coldplay. I’m not big on Coldplay’s music, but this has to be one of their best songs [and since then, I have listened to pretty much everything they've done]:

I will formally admit it - I am now a fan of Coldplay. Stone me if you must, but for once, I’ve found a secular band who don’t cuss, swear or generally pollute the mind. I’m happy.

Haha, no shame in that! I’ve been listening to Coldplay for a long time, they’re a great band. Definitely one of my favorites.

Yup, their music is pretty neat.

Would you like your stone small, medium or large? :-)

LOL Bro. Alan! I run too fast anyway, so you’d probably miss…

Definately a good band with quality music, i had to study them during my A Levels (Music Technology). In terms of enjoyable melodies and chord structures they are just so good! However in some of their albums lyrics wise, i dunno almost like each song is a poem and we’ll all interpret them differently anyway.

But I know for a lot of people this then brings up a larger debate about what is wrong and right music to listen to. What are your takes on the issue?

Tim,

Thanks for passing by. My take can be found in Philippians 4:8 -

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

I think Coldplay’s music at times looks at themes and concepts which are admirable, while at others they don’t. Being selective of what tracks you listen to is a good way. Ultimately, as a Christian, the Holy Spirit will convict me if the music I’m listening is not God-glorifying or edifying, for example, with secular hip-hop

I used to be a huge fan of Coldplay some time ago, but I have convicted that I shouldn’t listen to secular music willfully so I have not caught up with their latest efforts.

However, I’d admit that they aren’t the run-of-the-mill sex, drugs and rock n’roll band and their music is actually pretty healthy. My all-time favorite is still Clocks. ;-)

As for stoning, Alan might miss but I got a boulder just for you, Douglas. It comes with all my love…

LOL Bro. Isaiah! I’m telling Mum you’re threatening me [cries] LOL!
I fully understand. I myself have a handful of secular musicians I listen to, and even then I am highly selective of what I listen to from them. Ultimately, the matter, I believe, boils down to individual consciences…

Your mom will agree with me, my dear brother! ;-)

I don’t begrudge or disagree with those who listen to secular music; that’d be legalistic of me. It all boils down to individual choices and consciences as you said. I do listen to the radio on and off just to get a pulse of what’s hot out there in the world, but I cringe at almost every song with their openly sexual messages.

Besides, nobody does melodies like the folks did in the old days (I mean the 60s and 80s in particular, ha ha!).

Good for you brother! Its always nice to find to some artists that have not been completely hijacked by Satan.
